Seeing a Psychologist

The mere thought of consulting with a Psychologist is often daunting for most people. The fact that the thought has crossed your mind suggests that there may be something in your life that is causing enough discomfort for you to consider seeing a Psychologist.Seeing a Psychologist is often perceived to be a process exclusively for individuals with mental health issues, but it does not have to be that way.

People consult with a Psychologist for various reasons some of which are:

  • Experiencing emotions (sadness, anger, anxiety) more intensely than usual more often than not;
  • Having difficulty coping with the death of a loved one;
  • Having difficulty coping with a traumatic incident (recent or past);
  • Having difficulty coping with changes at home or at work;
  • Finding it difficult to relate with family and friends;
  • Experiencing difficulties in a relationship

One can, therefore, consult with a psychologist for clarity and guidance from a neutral, professional party.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy involves the client working one-on-one with a Psychologist in exploring areas in the client’s life that may be challenging or that may be causing psychological discomfort. Through therapy one is able to express oneself without judgement and to gain insight into one’s situation. Therapy involves assisting the client to better understand themselves while working towards their desired goal and/or change.

Couples Therapy

This therapeutic process involves the Psychologist working with a couple in identifying the challenges they may be experiencing in their relationship. The Psychologist assists the couple in gaining insight into their relationship and identify the interactional patterns that may be contributing to the challenges they are facing in how they relate with each other.

Family Therapy

In family therapy the Psychologist consults with family members regarding possible challenges they may be experiencing as a family unit. Changes in the family unit and/or in the life of one of the members can, at times, lead to discomfort in some of the family members which can lead to relational difficulties.  The psychologist, therefore, facilitates the process of communication and possible insight into the situation.
